“My mother taught me” by Brigita Ozolins

Photography: Simon Harsent

My mother taught me is a video and participatory work that aims to share cultural practices passed on from one generation of women to another and to demonstrate their ongoing significance in the Latvian diaspora and beyond.

The video will feature a series of interviews of women from the Australian Latvian diaspora who share their memories of traditions and skills passed on by their mothers, or grandmothers, and describe an item they have chosen that reflects those traditions. My mother taught me will invite workshop attendees and exhibition visitors to use paper and coloured pens to record their memories of a special cultural practice passed on by their mothers, taped to the walls , creating an ongoing archive of cultural memories throughout the duration of Remixing events.

An opportunity to share skills passed on from previous generations.

Bring an object or a photo of something that shows skills passed on to you from your mother, grandmother (or someone else). We will watch a video featuring women from the Latvian diaspora relating stories about skills pass on to them, then share the stories about the object we have brought with us. We will write about or draw our objects and display the results to a wall of shared skills. Writing and drawing materials will be provided. 90 minutes – 2 hours.
